FIRST SEMI-FINAL OF THE BriSCA F1 WORLD CHAMPS Coventry Stadium, Rugby Road, Brandon, Coventry, hosts the first BriSCA F1 Stock Car Racing World Championship Semi-Final on Saturday 1 August 2009 - and what an event is in prospect. Defending World Champion Andrew Smith starts the race in pole position, a not unfamiliar scenario for one of the most exciting drivers to grace the stock car racing ovals." The Champion said: "I have lost count of the number of times I have been in this position, and people might say it is easy to win from the front, as I have also started numerous World Finals at the front of the grid. Nevertheless, I cannot be complacent, because this year - more than any other in recent times - there are young drivers with the kit and the ability to shake the very foundations of the sport. Do I find it boring repeating my challenge for the World Title? Never. The nerves and the adrenalin are kicking in already and I am definitely out to win." The first four rows the the Semi Final are particularly daunting for Andrew. Matthew Newson starts alongside him on the grid and Matt is particularly hungry to put his name on the prestigious trophy; Paul Hines is inside row two with fellow Rotherham-based driver Mark Gilbank alongside him. Then come confident youngsters Lee Fairhurst, Daniel Wainman and Craig Finnikin, while on outside row four is past World Champion John Lund - possibly the greatest threat to Andrew`s dominations of the proceedings. In recent years, the World Final Trophy has rested with the highly-regarded Smith dynasty no fewer than ten times, with the aforementioned John Lund eight times, Peter Falding four times and Frankie Wainman Junior twice. While all these names are regarded as almost unbeatable by the other Championship contenders, 2009 could be the year when the BriSCA F1 World Championship trophy finds a new home and starts a trend of giving greater incentive to the raft of young drivers challenging the established domination of the sport. Time and the first Semi-Final at Coventry will tell and will surely make or break the confidence of the highly-fancied favourite for deposing Andrew Smith of his title: National Points Champion Frankie Wainman Junior, whose semi-final race is not until Birmingham at the end of August, where he also occupies pole position. If there was ever a race not to be missed, this Semi-Final at Coventry Stadium is surely the one. Twenty-four cars, with unlimited-power V8 Chevrolet engines, each with 600bhp+|; a 330-metre oval and just 20 laps to use all the skill and talent available; plus, of course, those specially-designed nerf rails to move the opposition out of the way in a race where contact is definitely permitted. Admission for Adults to the Coventry event is £18; Concessions are £13 and children up to 15 years £5. (fives and under are Free).
