SOAPBOX RALLYING

Fred Henderson, the well-known Durham City rally driver and garage proprietor, plans to re-invent soapbox racing as a way of introducing motorsport to the younger generation.

Soapbox rallying is cheap, accessible, green (with no engine, fuel con consumption and emissions are zero), safe (speeds are relatively low) and - above all - fun.

Henderson explains: "I apologise if my idea includes many other people`s ideas, not forgetting my father and grandfather, who were an important part of my formative years, making me and keeping me on the road in various soapboxes.

"The time has come for people of all ages to return to their youth and get involved in soapbox rallying: fathers and sons; brothers and sisters; grandparents and grandchildren.

"This is an open invitation to any school, youth group or college; in fact, anybody from any walk of life; we will even accept entries from the W.I. The only qualification is a will to get on and do something which doesn`t involve sitting in front of a screen or propping-up a bar. I would welcome a technically-advanced soapbox, say from a technical college.

"The big problem is making a start. It is not realistic to organise an event for an uncertain number of soapboxes of many different specifications and sizes. I invite people to get on and make a rally soapbox; when we have about 40, we can get together and organise an event.

"There must be hundreds of standard soapboxes around the country, but if we are to organise a competition which will be fought out, perhaps to the 100ths of a second, it is important that a set of regulations are introduced and that any new-builds are built to last for years and can continue to meet competitive regulations in the longer term. At an early event, it may be that any old soapbox would be allowed to run, but it seems unfair if the design is such that it holds a competitive edge and other people are not, for one reason or another, able to replicate that design.

"My intention is that events should eventually run with rally soapboxes of similar design; hence similar speed. The emphasis would thus return to the form we have always longed for, that of the best driver who wins on the day."
